I wonder what's in store for GMAIL users if GMAIL decided to retrench the product because of a failed beta test.

BTW, orkut has been down since iftar time in Karachi. Right now it's 7:00.

The only reason that products like Google News, orkut.com, Gmail etc. are still under a "beta" tag is because they protect the parent company, i.e. Google, from the legalities of liability. Google News, for example, has been a beta product for many many months now. Another reason why these products remain under beta testing and a full 1.0 launch is not done is because any revenues that they may generate from these products are not necessarily accountable since these products are not publicly available yet but, under "heavy testing". It's a common corporate loophole.

Gmail and Orkut are working for some users, some of the time. The time-outs are becoming frequent but you just need to keep checking back.

Zunaira said...

btw, new 'Report phishing' option for Gmail users [check in the Reply-Reply All line]. This is why you and I will keep trying to log back in ;~)

Abbas Halai said...

actually the phishing option exists under the "more options" link.

BTW, there is some speculation that GMAIL may not belong to Google. I read at some web sites that Google took quite a long time to legally register GMAIL and ther have been some queries regarding this. I dont exactly remember which site it was but I am sure if you do a search you will find out.

Orkut is again having problems. BTW, why is orkut the focus of so much attention? It's not the first social networking community neither would it be the last.

Another problem with GMAIL is its inability to attach some files due to security problems. I tried to send a Flash SWF file to a client of mine through GMAIL but it declined. Since the whole size of the package was more than 1 MB i had to create a new account at Yahoo (hotmail wouldnt accept attachment of > 1 mb) and send the file through that. So much for convenience.

Gmail has been acting up for the past couple of days now, and each time it refuses to log in I hope they're adding more features to it, hence the breakdown. Sigh, I am too optimistic.

Aay Dee, I dont remember the exact URL but there have been some speculations on certain web channels and if you searched on Google for this, I am sure you would find it.

The story ran along the lines that why did it take Google a long time to register Gmail as its product.

Actually the file size attachment usually hits a max limit at about 6 or 7 megs. The 10 MB allowance for file sizes is with MIME. The same holds true for Hotmail and Yahoo.

it seems that google is taking its own sweet time to develop its services. a lot of its services are in beta are forever. is it so difficult to deal with the bugs? why do we have to suffer whenever orkut isnt working or gmail has some problem? thats one reason why we have beta testers. its suprising that despite having a large pool of talent(including phds) google hasnt done anything great so far. here we are singing the praises of Google, which hasnt done anything but provide us with sub standard service. i get sick and tired whenever orkut has a problem. its not the dark ages. the world is advancing and they are still in the beta stage. there are lots of other services which have problems but they are still better than google. can google do something right? mark my words. google is nothing but a bubble waiting to burst. its easy to lure people with shiny objects. if they are of no use then why should i play with them.

As long as we get services for free, who cares right. My hotmail account just got upgraded to 250 MB . more the reason to keep it active. However, I do believe that Google needs to get its act together- orkut and gmail have been a nuisance for the past few days. Till the day that Google decides to go live, I am gonna stick with Hotmail.

BTW, no one has been able to answer my question as to why orkut is so popular - its not the first social community neither would it be the last.

Rafay: None of the other social communities before Orkut allow you to set up a sub-virtual community. You can invite friends to blog/post scraps on your page. But allowing people to create the interactive equivalent of a Yahoogroups was distinctive (not to mention simple). Besides, since its invite-only, its supposedly elusive which helps instant stardom.

Rafay Bin Ali said...

May be you are right. But if people were just looking for a way for their friends to post scraps, we already have the blogs for that. Also, web publishing has never been this easier as it is now with services having rich-text editors - no need to learn HTML or CSS.

Whatever the reason, it is for sure that Google has access to the most authentic consumer info channels. As such, i would really want Google to shed the beta flag and go live with something really concrete.

Rafay Bin Ali said...

BTW, Google is worth $182 on Nasdaq. Just thought I should mention it.

Usman, one of the reasons that I am still using GMAIL is its un-cluttered user interface - unlike that of Hotmail's and Yahoo's. I think I speak for many users when I say that GMAIL's user interface is one of it's USP's. Lets hope GMAIL doesnt ditch it for something more XP-like.
