Andy Dehnart, in his thesis, described how David Talbot, founder of online magazine Salon created a community back in 1995. Make them read that, may be administrators agree to let a new community be formed.

The management are already running a top-notch Internet mag... tell them if they need convincing they obviously haven't been reading it! The benefits are many, with hardly any downside... I'll make a small write up about it later.
