Google to launch IM

CNN reports in this article, that Google is going to launch their own Instant Messenger, called "Google Talk" very shortly. It will be a full-featured messenger, supporting voice as well as text. Using Jabber as their platform, Google Talk will interact with ICQ and iChat.

This should mean that it is compatible with AIM also (or so I think), but the article doesn't say that. For obvious reasons, it will not be compatible with MSN... :-)

Update: Google Talk has been released!

AIM and Jabber are very different protocols. It won't (doesn't) support AIM.

Thanks for correcting me. But AIM and ICQ are compatible...so how does that work?

AOL bought ICQ several years ago, and has linked up their backends.

Google talk is already released at talk.google.com and It's cool, nothing fancy, but the same old stuff you'd expect from an IM, no need for Gmail notifier now! It does lack the other advanced features like file sharing and webcam chat but it offers voice chat, they'll improve in the future most probably. Kudos Google!

So I've used Google Talk until my office IT wallas discovered its existence and blocked it [lo and behold!].

- What is the need for a Google messenger unless its compatible with MSN/Yahoo/AIM is my question.

- My Notifier works fine. What extra value does this one offer?

- Its great for people who are still not interested in being on MSN and other messengers. I know friends who find MSN etc. intimidating. GoogleTalk has a no-frills interface which could get some people's attention.

- Anyone tried voice chat on Google?

Yup, i've tried the voice chat. The voice chat is good, I mean, the "Quality" of voice is good, way better than the crappy voice quality Yahoo Messenger 7 Beta offers, and also I think a lil superior to MSN messenger, but there's no guarantee for the breaking up, that still depends on your internet connection, and with the unreliable dialup that I am using, It really gets frustrating whether Im using msn, yahoo, google, or skype, or whateva!

Is the voice quality better than Skype? I've liked its voice quality way better than MSN.
