Firefox is Microsoft's Friend

Dont Believe it... Open up firefox and pass the URL: -

http://http://www.spider.tm

You will find yourself surfing the Microsoft Website.

Infact any site with double http:// prefix ends up at microsoft instead of a invalid URL error.

Firefox doesn't issue an "invalid URL" error. Enter any invalid URL, and Firefox by default searches google for it, and takes you to the first relevant hit that is returned. Works just like the Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" feature. Infact it uses this feature of google.

If you enter "http://" and press "I'm Feeling Lucky" on google, you will notice that it indeed takes you to microsoft.com.

This is a usefull feature in Firefox. Think of it this way. You enter "learn java" into Firefox's address bar, and end up at some relevant website instead of an error. (In this case, javaworld.com)

Shuaib excellent anaylsis.

Just to add to the reply ...

Firefox envokes a Google "I'm feeling lucky" search when confused by a web address.

The question remains why Google resolves this double http address to Microsoft.com.

To add more ...Google doesn’t do so in French or Italian version of Google, but it does seem to do it for the English version.
